The sea is a mysterious and strange place. There are immensely deep section of the ocean that still have not been discovered or studied, which makes the ocean a subject of much terror and horror in people. Film makers have taken this mysteriousness and horror of the water to make some of the scariest but often unbelievable horror movies based on killer fish or sharks. Here is a list of films about killer fish who should be kept in large fish tanks so that they cannot cause anymore terror or death.
Jaws
The classic horror film that made a generation of people afraid to go into the water, “Jaws” is a landmark horror film by Steven Spielberg that still evoke terror in viewers. The modern day fear of sharks, most of which are relatively harmless to humans, can still be traced back to this 1975 film. Since then, sharks have become one of the most feared fish and most feared animals in the world, largely because of their film depiction in “Jaws” and the subsequent sequels. The “Jaws” film and franchise is so successful there have been 3D movies, theme park rides and video games based on the shark terror. Piranha (1978)
Largely a parody of “Jaws,” “Piranha” is a comedy horror film about a swarm of killer piranhas (who in real life have never been known to kill humans.) The film is of course filled with bikini clad women skinny dipping in the waters only to find themselves food for a swarm of vicious, murderous, piranhas that leave nothing but a pool of blood behind. There is a love sotry somewhere in the picture but most people have made “Piranha” into a cult film because of the intentional and unintentional comedy and gratuitous piranha killing scenes. The film spawned a number of sequels and a remake in 1995. Currently, Alexandre Aja, the talented French horror director who is known for his remake of “The Hills Have Eyes” and his wonderfully horrible “Haute Tension,” is said to be working on a 3D remake of the “Piranha” franchise.
